Rising Tide for Same Sex Marriage
Rising Tide for Same Sex Marriage By Michael Boyajian The Fishkill Democratic Committee gathered recently for its monthly meeting and to hear from Didi Barrett who is expected to run against New York State Senator Stephen Saland an opponent of same sex marriage. Didi Barrett is important to the gay community because she is a candidate who has pledged to support same sex marriage and because she is the first of many candidates who will ultimately be running this year in support of marriage equality making it a movement unseen since the days of abolition. After the debacle of same sex marriage in the state senate last year the gay community vowed to field candidates against all those who had opposed the measure. Didi Barrett spoke to the committee about the logistics of her campaign at one point asking those in attendance to raise their hands if they liked what was going on in Albany. No hands were raised. She then asked if anyone was ashamed of what was going on in Albany and every hand went up. She was then asked point blank if she supported same sex marriage and she answered yes without hesitation saying that it is not right to deny the happiness of marriage to any group of state residents. One committee member abruptly stated that she would lose half the vote in Fishkill because of that. But he was corrected by another member who pointed out that gays are also Republicans making reference to a local leader. It should also be noted that the area’s Republican Assemblyman, Joel Miller, is a vocal supporter of same sex marriage and he is re-elected time and time again. Ms. Barrett then moved onto other issues like the budget crisis and property taxes and her solutions to these serious problems. She also discussed local issues and how her family’s six decade roots in the senate district give her insights into the needs of the community. After she left the Fishkill Democratic Committee quickly moved to vote their support for her candidacy for state senate. Ms. Barrett has embarked on a series of “living room” appearances throughout the district meeting and greeting a broad spectrum of voters. She will officially declare her campaign against Senator Saland in early April becoming one of many around the state who will run this year as a rising tide in support of equality gains momentum. End
whose business?
my only concern about gay marriage is its effect on kids; do kids with two mommies or two daddies come out normal or f'd up?? (btw, I don't mean sexually, I mean generally.) I don't know. is there research, or is it too rare to find a sample?? other than that, who cares!! gayness is merely one of nature's little jokes on the continuum of sexual behavior. we don't deny people with other birth defects the right to marry, so why deny it to those pre-wired for sexual anomalies?? really, who cares.

While I disagree that sexual preference is a birth defect, I just want to say that children are already being raised by gay couples. The only thing that will change is that those couples will now have the same rights as heterosexual couples. The children will work out any explanations of their living situations the same way children work it out now. Not every child is raised by a mommy and a daddy. Some have step-parents. Some parents have live-in partners. Some are single. Some have roommates. Some children are adopted. And so on. Everyone deserves the same rights i didn't say that sexual preference was a birth defect, i said that gayness is a birth defect in nature's arsenal of genetic variety, certainly not as bad as some as it doesn't seem to affect longevity. it's certainly nonadaptive. if adam were gay and eve lez, the bible would be a very short book. maybe future geneticists will find that gene and re-wire it. is that a good thing?? i don't know, nothing wrong with variety, and the world population doesn't seem to be suffering for the 10% who are gay. don't feel insulted, genetic variety is what makes it fun, as long as it's the nonlethal kind.
Anonymous 3/14, how about before asking if kids with two moms or dads come out "normal", why don't you do some f*cking research? There is plenty of research done, and there a children now adolescent age and older who come from same sex parents who've been interviewed, written books, and been in the press. Do you live under a rock? (Even Rosie O'Donnel's adopted son is in his teens now). They come out "normal" and if anything more enlightened than kids from opposite sex parents. Same Sex Marriage is fine with me. I'm not quiet sure of any problems here. So what if they influance children, this is a free world.
