Thursday was the deadline for candidates to submit designating petitions to run for public and party office this year. This year is an “off-year” in New York City with very few electoral contests.
Here is a list of what contests there are with some commentary about who is who.
Note that this list is subject to change as a result of candidates withdrawing or being removed from the ballot.
Queens
There are no Democratic, Independence, Conservative or Working Families Primaries.
There are numerous Republican Primaries for State Committee as part of the continuing war between the County Organization and the insurgents led by John & Bart Haggerty.
There are contests for Male & Female State Committee in the following Assembly Districts – 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 31, 32, and 35.
The most interesting race appears to be in the 26th AD where former Council candidate Peter Boudouvas opposes new County Leader Phil Ragusa.
General Elections
The only contests in November are for Civil Court Judge in the 4th Judicial District where Democrat Cheree Buggs is opposed by Republican Robert Beltrani and the 6th JD where Democratic William Viscovich is opposed by Republican-Conservative Theodore Stamas. District Attorney Richard Brown, a Democrat is also the candidate of the Republican & Conservative Parties.
There may also be General Election contests for State Supreme Court Justice here and in the other counties as these candidates are not chosen in Primaries but are picked by conventions.
Brooklyn
Primaries
There are no Republican, Independence, Conservative or Working Families Primaries.
There are two Democrats running for Surrogate. Supreme Court Justice Diana Johnson and Civil Court Judge Shawndya Simpson. While the County organization has made no endorsement, County Leader Vito Lopez is backing Judge Simpson.
There is a race for one Countywide Civil Court spot, where Organization candidate Fred Arriaga, counsel to the Borough President, is facing Pia Wood, who lost a close race for Judge last year.
In the 5th District, former Councilman Noach Dear is running against former Judge Karen Yellen.
In the 6th district, Organization candidate Katherine Levine has 2 opponents, Daniel McCullough & Law Secretary Sharen Hudson.
General Elections
The Democrat who wins for Surrogate will face Theodore Alatsas, Republican-Conservative in November. And the Democrat who wins the countywide slot will join unopposed Democratic candidates Debra Silber, a sitting Civil Court Judge, Carolyn Wade & Robin Sheares and be opposed by Republican-Conservatives Vincent Martusciello, Michael Reinhardt & Phillip Smallman and Conservative Thomas Stadnik.
The winner between Dear and Yellen will have opposition from Republican-Conservative James McCall.
In the 40th City Council District, new Councilman Mathieu Eugene will be running for the third time this year. His new opponent is Republican Clarence John.
Staten Island
There are no Primaries at all. The only General Election contest is for District Attorney, where incumbent Dan Donovan is the Republican-Independence-Conservative nominee against Democrat-Working Families candidate Michael Ryan.
Supreme Court Justice Bob Gigante, the former Democratic County Leader is endorsed by the Democratic, Republican, Independence and Conservative Party for Surrogate.
Newly elected Republican Councilman Vincent Ignizio has no opponent in his first run for re-election and is supported by the Independence and Conservative Parties.
Manhattan
There are no Republican, Independence, Conservative or Working Families Primaries and there are no contests in November.
There is a Democratic Primary for Civil Court in the 9th District between 2 candidates who were defeated last year – Andrea Masley & Mary Rosado.
There are some Primaries for Democratic District Leader.
64th AD, Part B – Incumbent Alice Cancel is opposed by former Leader Norma Ramirez.
68th AD, Part A – There are (possibly) 4 candidates for Male District Leader and 3 for Female. Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV and incumbent Evette Zayas are running as a team as are George Espada and Monica Brown and Edward Gibbs and Naomi Langley. The 4th man running is Johnny Rivera.
68th AD, Part B – There are (possibly) 3 candidates for Male District Leader. Incumbent Harry Rodriguez is opposed by Manuel Onativia and the same Edward Gibbs as listed above.
The election law requires Mr. Gibbs to inform the Board of Election this week which district he is really running in.
68th AD, Part C – There are 2 candidates for Male and Female District Leader. Incumbents John Ruiz & Wand Lachtman are opposed by John Estrella & Marion Bell.
70th AD, Part A – Incumbent William Allen has 2 opponents – Jamel Goodridge and Geoffrey Johnson.
72nd AD, Part A – Incumbent Leaders Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat & Mayra Linares are opposed by Kevin Campbell & Judith Amaro.
72nd AD, Part B – The most interesting race among Manhattan leaders might be here. There are 4 candidates for Male District Leader and 3 for Female. The Male candidates are Councilman Miguel Martinez, Wigberto Astacio and Miguel Estrella. The Female candidates are incumbent Maria Morillo (supported by Assemblyman Espaillat), Albania Lopez (supported by Councilman Martinez), Yocasta Sosa (running with Astacio) and Francia Rodriguez (running with Estrella).
Bronx
There are no Primaries at all. The only General Election contest is for Civil Court in the 1st District where Democrat Donald Miles is opposed by Republican-Conservative Christopher Quaranta.
District Attorney Robert Johnson is supported by the Democrat, Republican & Conservative Parties.
