Fuzzy Math

Now that the Hillary vs. Rudy Presidential race is dead, the NY press is desperately hyping the other pipe dream – Mike for President dream. The latest to waste newsprint on the subject is New York Magazine.

Most of the story is the same old, same old about how voters want a competent alternative to the two major parties, blah, blah, blah.

But I was struck by two sentences in the story –

“In a Romney-versus-Clinton race, all that is ensured is their hard-core bases, meaning about 35 percent each,” says a GOP contender’s strategist. “Which means there would be room enough to drive through a third-party truck with Bloomberg license plates.”

Now I wasn’t a math major in college but in my limited work, I did learn that 35 + 35 = 70 and that 100 – 70 = 30.

And I know enough about politics to know that if each of 2 candidates start with 35% each, then the third candidate has a maximum of 30%, which is less than 35%.
