Exit Poll Tidbits

While most people who examine exit polls focus on what percentage of each group votes for which candidate, I’m more interested in what the polls tell us who voted not who they voted for.

Here’s some of what can be gleamed from this year’s exit poll in New York State.

54% of the voters were women.

71% were White, 17% Black, 6% Hispanic, 3% Asian.

Broken down by age, under 25 = 12%, 25-29 = 10%, 30-39 = 17%, 40-49 = 22%, 50-64 = 27% and 65+ = 11%.

Annual income breaks this way – under $15,000 = 6%, $15-$30,000 = 10%, $30-$50,000 = 16%, $50-$75,000 = 22%, $75-$100,000 = 13%, $100-$150,000 = 17%, $150-$200,000 = 8% and $200,000 or more = 9%.

Education has 20% high school or less, 24% some college, 31% college grads & 24% with Postgraduate degrees.

This might surprise folks but only 31% of New York voters said they were liberal as opposed to 25% conservative and 43% moderate. I personally believe that this because many voters who have liberal views call themselves moderate or conservative.

This might also surprise people who obsess over the Jewish vote but only 3% of voters said they were Jewish as opposed to 39% Protestant, 37% Catholic, 7% others and 14% with no religion.

48% of NY voters say they attend church weekly, 47% occasionally and 22% never.

20% say they are White Evangelicals?

58% are married and 33% have kids under 18.

69% have investments in the stock market.

33% are in a union household.

25% own a gun.

8% are veterans.

3% say they are Gay or Lesbian.
