The Gateway (Favor for Fidler Edition)

I long been a basher of the Board of Elections, but I’m not sure how much to blame them for what was bound to be a bad day under the best of circumstances; and frankly, the best of circumstances were unlikely to be present under a system dependent on, among others, 80 year old inspectors who work twice and year and cops and school janitors who couldn’t give a rat’s ass. So forums like this one are welcome; especially since it gives the Board of Elections a chance the novel experience of answering questions from folks armed with neither an agenda, nor a subpoena:

I don't know which is the funniest aspect of the Paladino push poll; the fact that no one in his campaign noticed that Chuck Schumer is a Jew (and that’s giving Paladino the benefit of the doubt about Tradd Schneiderman’s Episcopalian Baptismal Certificate) or the fact that the Republican ticket also contains no blacks or Hispanics (and no Jews either). Haberman does point out that Cuomo did not choose Schumer, but that only proves the point–only one member of Cuomo's ticket was chosen by Cuomo, and it would be unfair to demand that he be Jewish, Black and Hispanic (though it might have been nice if he was at least one of the last two). Amazing video; I've been waiting almost a quarter century (since Norm Adler did it in 87) to watch someone do this to Fred Dicker again. For this one time, the entire NYS political establishment (except the Cuomos), as well as many of those who claim to hate that establishment, are in Crazy Carl's Corner, even if they won‘t admit it publicly.

Carl’s kid should hardly be much of an issue–if Cuomo had a bastard child, would it make you want to vote for Paladino? Electrodes attached to my testes couldn’t compel that result. I mean, Mario had a child who’s a bastard, and we’re about to elect him Governor (thank G-d). In fact, to the extent the kid is relevant, it proves Paladino walks the walk on his pro-life fanaticism. This kid ain’t going to be sent upstate for personal hygiene lessons.

The most interesting aspect of the story is one the national media missed. Olbermann actually described Murdoch as being on Paladino’s side. But while Murdoch is reliably pro-Republican nationally, in NYS, Rupert does what’s good for Rupert. He’s been friendly with the Cuomos for decades, and always backs gubernatorial candidates he sees as sure winners; he backed Spitzer four years ago against a more credible Republican with a rationale so preposterous that I felt provoked to write a defense of John Faso. Paladino’s nomination relieved the Post of the need to posture this time around; it is perfectly reasonable for same conservatives to want Paladino beaten. But there’s no doubt that if Lazio won, Rupert would be sending Luca Dicker to do the same hit job on Lazio he’s doing on Paladino. Paladino to Fred Dicker: "I'll take you out!"
