Why are the Democrats unwilling to bifurcate the Bush tax cuts into two separate votes?

On the other hand, in a campaign where the GOP platform was almost explicitly “what we believe in and intend to do once elected does not matter, so we will avoid telling you any meaningful details; the only thing that matters is your rage, and we are your vehicle for its expression,” tax cuts for the rich was practically the only thing (besides oppossing Mosques) they stood for that they would admit to, so I suppose it’s hard to argue they don’t have a mandate.

Of course there are those ideological fanatics who argue that saving GM was an unforgivable betrayal of the principles of Adam Smith, but those principles won't feed the children of auto workers.
