Yesterday, a member of the NY State Senate suddenly realized I was a blogger and which blogger I was.
"You're the guy who's always right," he exclaimed, "I don't always like what you say, but you always get it right."

Is he saying Portman should have had an abortion instead?

Remnick: "Since the talks between Arafat and Barak collapsed, a decade ago, mainstream public opinion in Israel has become a paradox: majority support for the idea of a two-state solution, but a generalized distrust of Palestinian intentions."
Wrong!
There is no paradox; Israelis want a two-state solution precisely because they justifiably mistrust Palestinian intentions. The Future of the Israeli Newspaper Haaretz www.newyorker.com

Using Anthony Weiner to sell “progressives” on Israel is just plain stupid, since his positions are to the right of Netanyahu's (see above).
A better spokesman would be someone like Gary Ackerman, who strongly favors a two state solution and opposes further settlement activity, while rejecting the stupid excesses (like support for anti-Israel UN resos) and insufficiencies (like objecting to sanction against Iran) of J Street.
Since “progressive” support for repugnancies like "Boycott, Disinvestment & Sanctions" is growing, supporters of Israel needs to have effective spokespeople reaching this audience. For that purpose, Weiner is a loser. Weiner Sells Israel to Progressives: Not An Occupier, Settlements Not in Palestinian Territory | The www.observer.com
Wonderful analysis of the roots of the Arab revolt. I too think Obama gets too little credit, but as Sully’s noted, his pointing this out would be counterproductive.
But the real sharp point here is the inspiring example provided to young Arabs by….
…Israel!
Money quote:
"The Arab TV network Al Jazeera has a big team covering Israel today. Here are some of the stories they have been beaming into the Arab world: Israel’s previous prime minister, Ehud Olmert, had to resign because he was accused of illicitly taking envelopes stuffed with money from a Jewish-American backer. An Israeli court recently convicted Israel’s former president Moshe Katsav on two counts of rape, based on accusations by former employees. And just a few weeks ago, Israel, at the last second, rescinded the appointment of Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant as the army’s new chief of staff after Israeli environmentalists spurred a government investigation that concluded General Galant had seized public land near his home. (You can see his house on Google Maps!) This surely got a few laughs in Egypt where land sales to fat cats and cronies of the regime that have resulted in huge overnight profits have been the talk of Cairo this past year. When you live right next to a country that is bringing to justice its top leaders for corruption and you live in a country where many of the top leaders are corrupt, well, you notice."
It is also nice to see Ehud Olmert get some recognition for having had a positive impact upon the Middle East (executed in typical Olmert fashion—and I say this as a strong supporter of his election and peace plans). This Is Just The Start www.nytimes.com
