BILL THOMPSON FINDS FRIENDS AMONG HIS ROOTS

The last time we saw William “Billy” Thompson (some call him “Bill”), he was trying to impress everyone that his chances of defeating Mike Bloomberg were way better than most pundits thought. He was absolutely correct: but he lost the mayoral election anyway. You see: a bunch of democrats sold him out. Those modern-day “Judases” drank the mayor’s Kool-Aid with one hand, and took his dirty money with the other.  Plus Billy just didn’t make his case as urgently as he needed to.

So now Thompson -our former city comptroller- is back for another round. And you know me; I will give it to him straight with no chaser. And here it is.

BILLY: this time around, your chances of becoming mayor are even better: don’t blow it.

Look; when Anthony Weiner went down for the count, Billy Thompson has d a great week (politically speaking). This past month of Anthony’s wiener stories has one big whopping winner: William Bill Thompson. You can call this month of June, the most politically orgasmic month Billy has ever had in his NYC life.
I recently caught up with Bill Thompson at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall. Boro prez Marty Markowitz, his deputy Yvonne Graham, along with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hastick of CACCI (Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce Inc.) were jointly hosting the sixth annual Caribbean-American-Month Awards. It was a brunch which featured such Caribbean-American icons as Jamaican-born Una Clarke, and Trinidad-born Horace Morancie (an award recipient).

Thompson was the keynote speaker. His speech highlighted his work with one of the governor’s task forces: the one dealing with problems facing women and minority business-owners. He never talked about his mayoral ambitions; but he did talk about his roots; since his grandparents migrated from St. Kitts-Nevis in 1919.

Folks; Bill Thompson has some “coconut” in him. He has a little “banana-boat music” in him too. He was at ease with the crowd and appeared to be relaxed and comfortable -something he still has to work on. If someone ever comes along and organizes the large bloc of Caribbean-American voters out there for the picking, then that someone can become the next mayor of this half-naked city. I wonder if Billy knows this.  Go ask Marty Markowitz about Caribbean-American voters. Go on!!!

After Thompson spoke, he didn’t work the room half as hard as he should have; but he did have an ear to ear grin on his face: which showed he was in high spirits. When I saw him at another event last month, Billy’s aura was dull and his speech was flat. At this Caribbean-American event he was much livelier and more at ease.  Needless to tell you he was warmly received.

Billy Thompson isn’t “Mister Excitement”, but he is “Mister Dependable”. He is reliable, steady, cool, calm and collected. He has been around the block quite a few times and has paid big dues in NYC politics. Even now he continues to serve in pro-bono capacities on many boards, commissions and civic-organizations. He is a true community-activist and civic-leader. I am strongly leaning towards endorsing him for mayor even before this summer ends.  Call me big guy: call me.

Stay tuned-in folks.
