Another primary not worth a full column.
It’s now functionally a two man race, but one has one eye and is toothless and profusely bleeding. Still, Gingrich is angrier than ever and capable of doing some damage—and places like Alabama are not known for any particular prejudice against toothlessness anyway. Ron Paul will drag on because he’s on a mission from G-d or Adam Sm-th; there are caucus states on the map might actually draw out a victory, but his votes don’t come from the hide of either of his opponents, so he’s not really a relevant factor. It’s hard to see what the rationale is for a continuation of the Santorum campaign outside of a desire to accumulate a favor Mitt Romney will owe him, but as the race goes on even the value of that will become less and less worthwhile.
Verdict: the race may be over, but there will be more mayhem until the fat lady sings.

From the brilliant Todd Breitbart:
"Gerrymanders: beware of decoys.
Several wildly convoluted districts are easily identified by a glance at the map. It requires a large-scale map, however, to follow the tangles and see where these districts actually go. They were obviously created in a spirit of contempt for the NYS constitutional rule that Senate districts “be in as compact form as practicable.” But in examining the map for these curiosities, it is important to beware of decoys. If it is impossible to imagine what partisan advantage the Senate Majority could gain from an obnoxious feature, it is probably designed as a target of criticism, to be taken out later in a display of listening to the people – while the obnoxious features they really want remain intact."
As I noted, while the Assembly redistricting plan is not as bad as the one for the Senate, it is also a partisan gerrymander. Most of Assembly Republican Leader Brian Kolb's criticisms are quite apt, and he actually misses some I would make. Redistricting analysis shows Assembly gerrymandering too, not surprising Kolb | The Empire empire.wnyc.org
