The Gateway (Time is Tight Edition)

The alleged campaign for Congress from the 6th CD of allergist Dr. Robert "I'm allergic to the press" Mittman suddenly becomes newsworthy, as a result of the surprise appearance in its midst of machine political consultant Jay Golub, who’d previously put out fires (perhaps not the best choice of words) for Trojan Hack candidate Jeff Gottlieb.

Gatemouth outlines his Mittman conspiracy theory:

1) Gottlieb, a political morning glory who spent his life in a repeating cycle of withdrawing from races as soon as the machine asked him to, retires from Cardozo High to a job at the Board of Elections he holds at the pleasure of his County Leader, Joe Crowley, and then somehow ends up running against Crowley’s choice for Congress, Grace Meng, after first having circulating Meng’s petitions.

2) Just as the brush fire over whether Gottlieb's candidacy for Congress is actually an effort by Crowley to split the Jewish vote against his choice starts flaring into a full scale O'Leary and everyone is having a cow, Dr. Mittman, whose only seeming prior political involvement was organizing veteran's events with former machine Assemblywoman Ann Carrozza, mysteriously emerges as a candidate, and despite having no relevant experience, and no fundraising (at least none filed with the Feds), somehow makes the ballot, even though expert lawyer Jerry Goldfeder has been retained to challenge his petitions.

3) With Gottlieb gone, somehow Golub, who is mostly working for machine-backed candidates this year, emerges as Mittman's consultant.

4) Nationally, whenever a medical doctor with no discernable support or record emerges as a dark horse candidate for Congress, it has been safe to one assume he is an ideologue, usually concerned about with pushing for (or against) some health care plan, or obsessed with some other issue.

Instead, Mittman's only real statement issued during the campaign talks only in broad clichés and says nothing about anything:

"As the third child of a pharmacist and NYC school teacher in a middle-class family, Robert Mittman learned, at a very young age, what it meant to “work for a living.” It’s with that perspective that he recognizes that the middle class in Queens is being threatened today. Dr. Mittman wants to bring an independent voice to our nation’s capital, help stop excessive and wasteful government spending, move Healthcare reform in the right direction and help the economy get back on track.

Mittman states, “I decided to run for the United States Congress because I believe that our government is no longer working in the best interest of the people. Something is wrong in Washington and as a lifelong community resident, a parent, a voter and medical doctor I am here to offer a "Prescription for a Healthy Economy.”

Mittman continued, “I am not a career politician like all of my opponents. I’m a medical doctor who runs a practice on Bell Boulevard in Bayside, Queens. As a doctor, I have been trained to diagnose an illness and prescribe the proper treatment. I will apply these same techniques as a representative in Congress. My candidacy gives the voters in the 6th Congressional District a real alternative to politics as usual.”

5) Mittman brags about having been Student Body President at Benjamin Cardozo High School.

Brooklyn GOP Kills Its Parent and Then Pleads for Mercy As an Orphan Department:

GLENN NOCERA: "Dear fellow club members, I was contacted by the next State Senator of the 27th SD David Storobin. He is calling on our club members for help in making sure that his vote recount goes smoothly without any fraud in the recount process. As it sits right now David is up by 27 votes, and that automatically triggered a recount from the Board of Elections, due to his victory being below 0.5 percent or below 110 votes. Lets make sure that the democrats don't pull any Boss Tweed style tactics and steal this election win from David and the Republican Party. If you could help out please report to 345 Adams street 4th floor, were the votes get counted, from 10-430 pm starting Thursday May 17 and through out every business day mon-fri until the count is finished. David's team will be there guiding you on what to do to make sure that every vote is counted without any fraud. Be apart of a historic election and help our party to victory. Thanks Glenn Nocera President of the Brooklyn Young Republican Club. Going Strong Since 1880."

Given the limited opportunity for observer participation in a recount process which has now reached the stage where all 22,000 votes are presumptively valid, and the repugnant and libelous nature of this despicable prick's insinuation, I think it is not out of line to suggest that the real intent here is to shut the count down Roger Stone style if things go south for the Republicans.

As I noted several times before in roughly similar words, there may be room for a “Radical Centrist” party articulating unfocussed populist outrage, but it won’t attract many white male millionaires or political pundits, and it won’t be headed by a man who repealed term limits supported by the public in two separate referendums.

For the record the top polling declared candiates of Americans Elect were a an-anti elite populist crank (Buddy Roemer) who got edged out of his Governorship by a Klansman after once articulating an American's Elect type agenda he's since abandoned, and the former Mayor of Salt Lake City (Rocky Anderson) who left the Dems precisely because they were too close to an Americans Elect type agenda.

Leading their draft choices were a neo-confederate crank (Ron Paul), with third place going to a Socialist (Bernie Sanders) fourth to the incumbent and fifth going to their great white hope, Bloomie.

My favorite name for a fantasy Jewish law firm would be Whitefish, Pike and Chrain, but Sherman & Berman would run a close second.

Just for the record, Congressman Brad Sherman's primary opponent (via reapportionment), Congressman Howard Berman, is also Jewish, but a somewhat more dovish Zionist–but because of Berman's crucial placement on the Foreign Affairs Committee (former Chairman, current ranking Dem), voting for him is a far better bet for helping Israel, even for more hawkish Jews.

One reason why Sherman is less of a yutz than Mark Schimel: his mother actually supports him (even if it is not reciprocated) Brad Sherman’s family portrait, Jewish and goyish editions | Berman v. Sherman | Jewish Journal www.jewishjournal.com

GATE: I've nuthin against Donna Summer who recorded perhaps the only listenable version of "MacArthur Park,”' but perhaps because I was in DC when Go-Go was born, I will always have more vivid memories of Chuck Brown, who still cranked last year in Prospect Park opening for the Night Tripper.

Chris Owens Sorry, the original "MacArthur Park" is just a classic! You should hear me do Richard Harris! :)

GATE: Someone left your taste out in the rain

Chris Owens Very good, Gate! :) But my association with this song is a long summer sitting in a car with my brothers listening to WABC while my mother shopped at store after store trying to find the best discounts on some new furniture. My brothers and I have certain songs indelibly etched into my brain as "definitive" 60s pop … This was one of them.

GATE: “Seasons in the Sun” is etched into my memory, too —but that doesn't make it anymore palatable than wet cake. Anyway, I don’t think it possible to have gotten further afield from the subject at hand.  Chuck Brown made D.C. a better place www.washingtonpost.com

The original bass with the Mar-Keys , but not with Booker T & the MGs (that would be Lewis Steinberg, who though Memphis was full of Jews, was actually from a prominent local black family), Duck Dunn did not play on “Green Onions,” but defying the stereotype of who played what role in racially integrated groups, provided the bottom for some of the Deepest Soul ever recorded.
