THE BROOKLYN PAPER: Borough President Markowitz’s campaign now says that it must kick the Beep’s sole Democratic primary challenger off the ballot to ensure the “integrity” of the balloting process.
On Monday, three Markowitz allies filed objections against nominating signatures collected by political newcomer Eugene Myrick, who handed in roughly 6,000 signatures more than the 4,000 required to secure a spot on the Sept. 15 primary ballot… …Myrick…said last week that “it’s ridiculous that someone would challenge a virtually unknown newcomer.”
“Why not let the democratic process play itself out with campaigning, debates and allowing the people to vote?” he asked. “What are they afraid of?”…
… After The Brooklyn Paper reported last week about the Markowitz campaign’s preliminary move to challenge Myrick, the online version of the story was flooded with comments about Markowitz’s attempt to ensure that he does not have a Democratic challenger.
“OK, Mr. Porch-wine drinking, Brooklyn Bridge-selling, pretend Cyclone riding, sound nuisance, potato-shaped amphitheater proponent, Atlantic Yards crappy giveaway, Bozo the Beep, I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR YOU AGAIN! EVER! NEVER! EVER! NEVER-EVER!” posted Fourth Estate from DUMBO. “I would write in Sarah Palin before I would even consider pulling the lever under your name.”
Jerry from Coney Island added, “Borough President Marty Markowitz: As they say in Gaelic, you are a putz! I’d vote for anyone but you come this November. You self-serving, loud and obnoxious political hack.”
THE NEW YORK POST: Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, who pushed hard for a citywide term-limits extension because he claimed it gives voters "more choices," is now petitioning to kick his only Democratic primary opponent off the September ballot.
Markowitz, who is seeking a third four-year term, recently joined three of his political allies in filing legal papers asking the courts to bounce East New York activist Eugene Myrick from the race, alleging the political novice didn't obtain enough valid petition signatures to run.
"He's scared. It really says a lot that he'd try to get a virtually unknown opponent off the ballot when he campaigned about term limits giving the public more options," said Myrick, adding he believes he collected enough signatures.
I think it is fair to say that Mole333 of the Daily Gotham has engaged with me over the years in a vigorous contest to see who can be the web’s nastiest critic of Marty Markowitz not affiliated with “Decay; Don’t Develop Brooklyn. (DDDB).” In fact, given that my criticism of Markowitz on development issues has been of the nuanced variety, I think my harsh critiques of our Beep have cut even deeper to the bone.

Since I am not reflexively anti-development (though certainly not a reflexive supporter of Markowitz‘s plans), my critiques have focused upon the seeming absence of anything approaching intellectual rigor in the statements which emanate from Brooklyn Borough Hall. As I’ve said before, they appear to be “dissembling by means of buzzwords, on auto-pilot, sometimes without relation to the topic at hand.”
I first started worrying about this in 2003 when Markowitz’s office issued a statement during a cultural war in Carroll Gardens concerning a proposed shelter for victims of domestic violence, which was being opposed by a group of delusional bigots, as well as by members of the Scotto family. A statement released by Markowitz said "We are currently evaluating the project to determine whether this is the most appropriate location for the facility."
Not “an appropriate location” (a standard one could hardly argue with) but “the most appropriate location” (as if there were only one in the world that would be truly acceptable).
Shortly after the shelter incident, there were complaints that Board Six in Brownstone Brooklyn had three members from the same small block in Park Slope, but none from two NYCHA developments which together accounted for somewhere over 5,000 people. Asked to explain the appointments, Markowitz’s then Director of Community Boards, Bob Capuano, a clueless Republican currently challenging Vinnie Gentile for his Council seat after “service” on the staff of Vino Fossella, stated that the appoints were within the Borough President’s statutory authority, as if that ended the conversation rather than began it.
Capuano was correct, but that was the only reason why we cared. If they weren’t within the Beep’s authority, we’d have been complaining to someone else. We were asking him to explain the reasoning for the choices so that we could determine if we wanted him to continue exercising that power, or whether we wanted someone else to do it.
But therein lies the real rub. There is no opposition. Last time, exasperated by Markowitz’s endorsement of Mike Bloomberg, I urged voters (on the Politicker–this was pre-Room 8) to vote for the imbecilic Green candidate, Gloria Mattera, on the theory that one good turncoat deserved another.
Was endorsing Blomberg the worst thing in the world? Perhaps not in and of itself; but such actions provided poltical cover to the Krugers, Espada and Hikinds of the world when they committed attrocities far more nefarious. Plus, staying in office gave Bloomberg reason to continue to singlehandly finance the NYS Republican Party.
For awhile, this year looked even more dismal. The Republican candidate’s major complaint about Markowitz is that he hasn’t been aggressive enough pushing for Atlantic Yards. That from the Party which normally believes that not only eminent domain, but all environmental regulations, are takings.
Then came Eugene Myrick, Publisher and CEO of Chocolate Brides Magazine and Chocolate Brides.com.
Hearing of his candidacy, I immediately decided to find out as little as possible about Myrick, lest I learn enough to prevent me from casting a protest vote for his hopeless candidacy.
I expected Myrick to get blitzed. But I also expected the results to reveal some unexpected areas of weakness which might prove useful. In his Public Advocate’s race four years ago, Norman Siegel carried two Assembly District in the entire City–Brooklyn’s 52nd and 57th, which happened to be the ADs containing Atlantic Yard, which Siegel vehemently opposed; a similar result in this primary might provide useful leverage in the battles ahead.
It was with some sadness that I read of the results of Myrick’s efforts to get on the ballot. Reports form the Markowitz camp initially said Myrick had only a few dozen signatures more than the 4,000 he needed. Myrick claims roughly 10,000. It almost makes one yearn for the restoration of the old requirement that petition cover sheets contain an accurate signature count, but these days it is considered too laborious to even count the number of one’s volumes.
Myrick apparently filed 4,477 sheets of signatures in 20 volumes, but only 1,201 sheets had any signatures on them at all. He apparently filed pages after page of blank sheets. The pattern was that the first and last few sheets of a volume had signatures, with hundreds of blank pages in between; all casing, with no sausage inside, with the intent of fooling the potential consumer. It is also alleged that at least 8,034 of Myrick’s signatures are invalid because the signatory either did not live in Brooklyn or is not a registered voter enrolled as a Democrat.
Those who don’t think any of this matters are often the same liberals who bemoan the Brownstone Council race where five local reform types are set to divide their Brownstone base against the choice of the County Leader. Despite the possibility that the field could be thinned and clarified by getting rid of lunatics on hopeless ego trips, other candidates demurred, fearing the consequence of being disqualified from endorsement by the NY Times. As a result, the election of a candidate the Times could actually support becomes far less likely.
Meanwhile, in the races where the same voters would like to be able to cast their vote for some nut on an ego trip, no one is shy about going for the kill. Hence the likely demise of Myrick.
I wanted to write about this to ask “why?”
DDDB and its allies claim they have numbers, especially in Brownstone Brooklyn. While there is an argument to be made against quixotic crusades, I've never heard DDDB make that argument. They are ready, willing and able to tilt at both windmills and skyscrapers. Why could Dan Goldstein not be Sancho Panza and Lucy Koteen Aldonza? Even if they got a sudden bout of pragmatism, it wasn’t like they had anything to lose by pissing off Markowitz.
Were they afraid the Republican would win instead? Why did no one help this man Myrick?
Intending to write an article exploring this question, I finally did a little research about Mr. Myrick.
As such, I will shed no further tears for him.
What I discovered is that Myrick is the running mate of raving psychotic nut job Jimmy McMillan of “The Rent Is Too Damn High Party.”
According to the Village Voice, McMillan, also known as “Prince Jimmy” and “Papa Smurf,” ran for governor in 1994, traveling much of the state on foot, and was expelled from the state Democratic Convention after he heckled Mario Cuomo. During his 1993 run for Mayor, McMillan was found at the side of the Belt Parkway tied to a tree, blindfolded, and doused with gasoline; in October 1993, McMillan climbed a cable on the Brooklyn Bridge, was coaxed down by police, and then hospitalized.
McMillan has qualified as a Democratic candidate for Mayor with petitions of the same quality as Myrick’s. I know they are the same quality because they are the same petitions. Substantially more than half of Myrick’s sheets were with McMillan. On many of the sheets, including most of the blank ones, it was McMillan who was the Subscribing Witness.
McMillan qualified because Bill Thompson and Tony Avella harbor false hopes of receiving a Times endorsement which Markowitz could care less about (unlike in 2001, where it provided the icing on his Victory Cake); as a result, they let McMillan’s pile of crap go unchallenged.
But McMillan is also running in the general election, on “The Rent’s Too Damned High” line (if he qualifies for it), and Gene Myrick is his running mate.
This entails several problems. One is that it is hard to get cranky about Markowitz’s likely future endorsement of Bloomberg, when Myrick has already endorsed the candidate of another Party.
I happen to like Bill Thompson just fine, but whatever his perceived failings, one thing is clear–those hoping to make a statement by casting a quixotic protest vote for a candidate who can’t win should do so in the most effective manner possible: by voting for Bill Thompson. No other vote will even be heard. The only focus will be on Bloomie’s margin–let’s cut it.
But even if one can’t bring oneself to vote for Thompson, one should not come within 1000 yards of McMillan or anyone associated with him. If you can’t vote for Bill, then how about the Naked Cowboy (who gets more and better press coverage than Thompson anyway) or Reverend Billy (who’s far funnier than the Cowboy)–both may be nuts, but compared to McMillan, they’re pictures of sanity.
I’m not sure, but I think that McMillan was the really scary nut my family encountered on Simchat Torah, right before the election, in Cadman Park, screaming not to vote for Obama. Check out the links for his pictures. But it is not McMillan’s looks which are most scary, but his views. As EnWhySeaWonk has pointed out, McMillan “thinks rent is too damned high because of the Jew landlords.”
Here, the joke is on McMillan, as most of the City’s former Jewish-owned slums are now in the hands of Arabs, probably as part of some "Land For Piece" deal.

Let me make clear that this is even worse than it appears. If one is to take McMillan seriously, and there is not one bit of evidence to suggest that McMillan has a sense of humor, one must conclude from his words and his link that the "fake Jews" he blames for 9/11 are Judaism’s Reform and Conservative movements.
One must assume that Myrick has met with McMillan, discussed his platform and found him simpatico. It is one thing to take help from other campaigns to qualify in a party primary; it is quite another to run as the candidate of a political party with a clearly articulated message of hate, paranoia and psychosis. McMillan IS the "The Rent’s Too Damn High Party." By running on its line, Myrick is embracing McMillan and his message.
And if Myrick's done this without ill intent, innocent of who and what he's hooked up with, then he's just TOO DAMN STUPID to hold important office. Perhaps the Borough Presidency doesn't count as such, but one day, if Myrick's not stopped, he may run for something important, like City Council or State Assembly.
If Markowitz knocks Myrick off the ballot, I’ll shed no tears, and neither should you.
And if anyone wants to bring a challenge against all the petitions for "The Rent is Too Damn High Party," and all its candidates, sign me up as a volunteer.
