The Tunisia/Egypt Debate Continues:

NICK RIZZO: Yeah, I grant [that Islamists are] a concern, but it's not enough to convince me a priori that these (overwhelmingly secular) protests are wrong. It's still unclear if we're looking at Tehran '79, Beijing '89, or Belgrade '00.

GATE: Tunisia is overwhelmingly secular; Egypt reminds me of Iran–there were many secularists fighting the Shah, but they ended up quite unhappy–and a Brotherhood takeover of Egypt would be the end of a three and a half decade cold peace on the Eastern border, so pardon me for being cautiously pessimistic

RIZZO: You might be right, though it's also possible that the Brotherhood's influence in Egypt is overstated, that it's been useful for Mubarak to have them as the face of the opposition. I think some of Iran's anti-Americanism stems from our support for the Shah, and that if we'd abandoned Pahlavi a little bit earlier we might have had more control over who replaced him. The whole situation is very, very hard to predict.

GATE: The problem in Iran was we wanted control; we should have never have overthrown a secular democratic regime and installed the Shah.

I don't want control–just peace

Sampson: "The Majority may Rule, but in a deliberative democratic process, the Minority still has Rights. I am concerned about the precedent these attempted actions may create in our body, and I am concerned about the signal this attempt to rush things sends to the public."

Except apparently, for the Minority within the Minority, who, if Sampson had his way, would sit where he chose, even though they want nothing to do with him. Today's Senate Rules Rumpus Update www.nydailynews.com
