The Gateway (Betty Ford Memorial Edition)

Betty Ford, the greatest First Lady of my lifetime.

Alev ha-sholem. May her memory (like her life) be a blessing

I think I need a drink. Former first lady Betty Ford dies at the age of 93 www.cnn.com

ADDENDUM: As a reader has noted, this analysis sort of ignores the existence of Hillary Clinton.

I guess I don't think of Hillary as a First Lady; I think of her as a counsellor. She did not paly the First Lady role, which is fine with me, for she played a role far more important.

David Greenfield thinks the old Weiner seat may survive: “I know conventional wisdom is that Weiner's seat will be chopped up during redistricting, but if Cuomo will REALLY veto 'partisan' lines…”

Gotta disagree; what are the odds that a district looking anything like the 9th would emerge from an independent redistricting?

Something like the 9th CD could only emerge from a political process. Weprin to Run for Weiner's Seat www.theepochtimes.com

Vito expounds on the threat that is Bob Turner. Hate to nitpick, but:

1) 1) Turner got 39% in 2010, not 42%

2) It is virtually impossible for Weprin to do better in Brooklyn than Queens, given what areas the district covers

3) 2010 was not the height of Weiner's popularity, it was the year Weiner married a Muslim Democrats Fear Republican Bob Turner www.youtube.com

Quite the coincidence that this story appears in the Post the day Weprin is nominated and gets about four times the space.

Anyway, I don't understand the complaint; it's not as if there isn't a Democratic County Leader who actually lives in Queens. Crowley Responds to Questions About His Residence | PolitickerNY www.politickerny.com

This appointment of Larry Schwartz as the Governor’s Secretary may seem counterintuitive, but it's not.

After it, were it not for the work Schwartz did for David Paterson, Cuomo might not have been the Democratic nominee in 2010. Cuomo Switches Secretaries: Cohen Out, Schwartz In | PolitickerNY www.politickerny.com

I will note that, for about two decades (before he eventually changed his position), Joe Lentol voted for the death penalty in contravention of his Church's position (that respect for "life" is a seamless garment), and they never once returned a check to him. The story of Dan Feldman's mother's 1973 suicide after being stricken with cancer reminds me of how, during Feldman's 1980 race for a Brooklyn Assembly seat, sleazebag political strumpet Alan Rocoff (currently under indictment) put out a piece of lit for Feldman opponent Ruben Margulies, accusing Feldman of living with his mother in the Rockaways.
