Egg on Fred’s Face

Yesterday wasn’t the best day for the New York Post’s Fred Dicker, who supposedly is the best-informed Albany reporter around.

Some may recall (though I’m sure Dicker hopes not too many) that he wrote a column in May predicting doom for Assembly Democrats if they tried to pass a bill legalizing gay marriage.

Here’s part of what Fred wrote

Many insiders predict a significant number of the Assembly Democrats – and possibly a majority – will oppose the measure, led by conservative-oriented upstate and suburban lawmakers and a large number of African-Americans and Hispanics, many of whose constituents strongly oppose gay marriage.

Well the votes are in. And not only did a majority of all Democrats support gay marriage but so did a majority of upstate Democrats (17-9), suburban Democrats (15-1) and African-Americans and Hispanic Democrats (19-8).

More recently, Dicker broke the Post exclusive that Mayor Mike Bloomberg was seriously considering running for Governor of New York as a Republican.

Mayor Bloomberg, who'll be forced to leave office when his term expires in less than three years, is eyeing a run for governor against Eliot Spitzer in 2010, a top New York Republican has told The Post.

"On two occasions in recent weeks, the mayor brought up the possibility of running for governor, of running against Spitzer in 2010," said the senior Republican, who said he was surprised at Bloomberg's blossoming – and clearly unequivocal – interest in the state's highest office.

"He's saying he can do for the state what he did for the city – bring professional management and not politics," said the Republican, who demanded anonymity.

I think Fred needs some new sources.
