Who’s Running – Part 1

Thursday was the last day to file petitions to run as either a Democrat, Republican, Conservative, Working Family or Independence Party candidate.

Azi Paybarah at the 51st State site went to the NYC Board of Elections and has listed many of the candidates who filed petitions. http://www.nysun.com/51stState/

Today and for the next few days, I’ll be posting some more detailed lists so we can see who is running against whom.

These lists are subject to change as some candidates will withdraw and may be replaced and others will be removed from the ballot because of challenges to their petitions. This list does not include any races where petitions are filed at the State rather than the NYC Board of Elections.

Let’s start with what most of us consider the main event – Democratic Party Primaries for Public office:

Manhattan

State Senate

25 SD  (Brooklyn & Manhattan) – Senator Marty Connor is being challenged by former Council candidate Ken Diamondstone.

28 SD  (Bronx & Manhattan) – Senator Jose Serrano is opposed by perennial candidate Agustin Alamo Estrada.

29 SD – The vacant seat being left by David Paterson has 2 candidates – former Councilman Bill Perkins & former candidates Ruben Vargas.

Assembly

68 AD  – Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV is being opposed for at least the third time by former fire fighter John Ruiz and for the first time by Edward Gibbs.

69 AD – Assemblyman Danny O’Donnell is challenged by Francisco Spies & Miguel Estrella.

70 AD – Assemblyman Keith Wright is opposed by Monique Washington.

72 AD – Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat faces former candidate Francesca Castellanos.

74 AD – First term Assemblywoman Sylvia Friedman is being challenged by 2005 Council candidate Brian Kavanagh, Esther Yang & Juan Pagan.

Civil Court Judge

Countywide – Judge Jane Solomon was opposed by Patrick Hayes Torres but he has already withdrawn and may be replaced

District 1 – Judge Paul Feinman is opposed by Francis Alberts.

District 2 – Housing Court Judge David Cohen, Court Attorneys Andrea Masley & William Ramos and Margaret Chan are running for an open seat.

District 4 – Judge Eileen Rakower is being challenged by Richard LaFontaine.

District 7 has 2 spots with potential Primaries. For one, former Court Attorney Louis Nock and Verena Rivera Powell filed. For the other Court Attorney Rita Mella and Mary Rosado & Philippe Dussek filed petitions. How this shakes out is very difficult to explain. A similar situation exists in Brooklyn. If anyone is interested, I tried to explain this in an earlier post about electing judges.

District 9 – Court Attorney Lori Sattler and Almando Lopez are running.

Bronx

Congress

7 CD  (Bronx & Queens) – Congressman Joe Crowley is opposed by Jose Serrano (no relation to Congressman or Senator). But Azi says this Serrano will be replaced by retired police officer Charles Serrano.

State Senate

32 SD – Senator Ruben Diaz is challenged by Israel Cruz.

33 SD – Senator Efrain Gonzales faces Richard Soto.

Assembly

77 AD – Assemblywoman Aurelia Greene has 2 opponents – former Council candidate Anthony Curry & Tina Lee Rodriguez.

78 AD – Assemblyman & County Leader Jose Rivera is opposed by Jose Torres.

79 AD – Assemblyman Michael Benjamin has 4 opponents – District Leader Wilbert Lawton, Sigfredo Gonzalez, Gwendolyn Primus & Migdalia Soto

80 AD – Bronx Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera is opposed by 2 of her 2004 opponents, former Community Board Chair Joe Thompson & Irene Estrada Rukaj + Robin Basile.

84 AD – Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo is opposed by Harry Almodavar & Augustin Alamo.

85 AD – Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr. is challenged by Carmen Hernandez.

86 AD – Assemblyman Luis Diaz is opposed by Gloria McFarland.

Civil Court Judge

Countywide – Bronx organization choice Doris Gonzalez is opposed by Marcos Pagan III & Osvaldo Caban, Jr.

Brooklyn

Congress

10 CD – Congressman Ed Towns is opposed by Councilman Charles Barron & Assemblyman Roger Green.

11 CD – As we all have read, 4 candidates are running to succeed Major Owens. His son Chris, Senator Carl Andrews, Councilwoman Yvette Clarke & Councilman David Yassky.

State Senate

18 AD – Senator Velmanette Montgomery has a last minute opponent in former Councilwoman Tracy Boyland.

20 SD – There are 3 candidates for the seat being vacated by Carl Andrews – former Police officer Eric Adams and former candidates Anthony Alexis & Guillermo Philpotts.

21 AD – Senator Kevin Parker is being challenged again by former Councilman Noach Dear.

Assembly

40 AD – Suddenly well-known Assemblywoman Diane Gordon is being challenged by a former opponent Kenneth Evans & by former School Board member Winchester Key.

42 AD – Assemblywoman Rhoda Jacobs has 2 former opponents Zacary Lareche & Michele Adolphe opposing her.

43 AD – Assemblyman Karim Camara (who replaced Clarence Norman) is opposed by Jesse Hamilton & Saquan Jones.

46 AD – Assemblywoman Adele Cohen is not running again. Candidates for her seat are 2 activists in the Russian community –  Alec Brooks-Krasny & Ari Kagan along with former Community Board Chair Marty Levine.

55 AD – Assemblyman William Boyland Jr. is opposed by former Council candidate Royston Antoine.

56 AD – Assemblywoman Annette Robinson is opposed by former candidate Richard Taylor.

57 AD – There are 3 candidates for the seat being vacated by Roger Green. Former candidate Hakeem Jeffries, District Leader Freddie Hamilton and Senate staffer William Batson.

58 AD – Assemblyman Nick Perry is being challenged by former candidate Wellington Sharpe.

59 AD – New Assemblyman Alan Maisel is opposed by Abraham Levy & Harvey Clarke.

Civil Court Judge

Countywide – There are 2 slots open. Candidates for 1 slot are Organization choice Jacqueline Williams, Pia Wood & Philip Smallman. For the other slot, the candidates are organization choice Dena Douglas, Robin Sheares & John Serpico.

Queens

State Senate

10 SD – Senator Ada Smith has 3 opponents – gun control activist Elizabeth Goldsmith, former School Board member Shirley Huntley & former Council Allen Jennings Jr.

13 SD – Senator John Sabini is facing City Councilman Hiram Monserrate.

Assembly

22 AD – In the district being vacated by Jimmy Meng, the candidates are former Assemblywoman and Councilwoman Julia Harrison, District Leader Terence Park, Council staffer Ellen Young & Assemblyman Meng’s daughter Grace Meng.

25 AD – In the one being left by Brian McLaughlin, there are 2 candidates – District Leader Rory Lancman & former Senate candidate Morshed Alam

 31 AD – Assemblywoman Michelle Titus is opposed by former candidate Michael Duvalle.

39 AD – Assemblyman Jose Peralta is opposed by Carmen Enriques.

There are no Democratic Primaries for local public office on Staten Island.
