New York’s election law requirements are justly criticized. So much so that I usually agree with the complaint that they are the worst in the land.
But then I read the following about Pennsylvania:
Diamond is hoping to get on the fall election ballot as an independent candidate for governor. He gained notoriety for channeling voters’ anger over last summer’s legislative pay raise into an effort to oust those lawmakers.
As a third-party candidate for governor, Diamond needs to collect 67,070 signatures by Tuesday. At last count, Diamond had 26,000 signatures. With the deadline looming, that’s where the mailman comes in….
Gov. Ed Rendell and Republican candidate Lynn Swann needed 2,000 signatures to get on the primary ballot (their victories in uncontested primaries put them on November’s ballot). Rendell garnered more than 55,000 signatures, and his campaign heralded that as a state record.
