Who’s Not Running

A while ago, I reported on the candidates who filed petitions to run in contested Primaries in New York City. Now I’m reporting which elections in New York State do not have a traditional Republican vs. Democrat contest. That is, the Congressional & State Legislative districts where either the Democrats or Republicans do not have a candidate running.

Congress

4 Democratic Members of Congress – Rep. Gary Ackerman, Rep. Gregory Meeks, Rep. Anthony Weiner & Rep. Maurice Hinchey have no Republican opponents.

State Senate

15 of the 62 State Senators do not have major Party opponents. 7 are Democrats from New York City plus 1 Republican from NYC – Marty Golden.

Interestingly, among the districts missing Republican candidates are 2, those represented by Diane Savino & Jose M. Serrano, that the Republicans targeted two years ago.

One of the districts without a Republican is the 25th represented by Marty Connor, who does have a Democratic Primary opponent.

Outside the City, just 1 Democrat – Suzi Oppenhemer of Westchester is unopposed. The other 6 unopposed candidates are Republicans.

State Assembly

43 of the 150 Assembly members have no major Party opposition.

24 are Democrats from New York City, including 3 – Tony Seminerio, Steve Cymbrowitz & Dov Hikind who are running with Republican endorsement.

Of the City Democrats unopposed, at least 10 are in Assembly Districts that the last major Republican Party candidate – Mayor Michael Bloomberg – won last November.

A few of those unopposed in November, like Connor above, do have Democratic Primary opponents.

The other 19 unchallenged are from Long Island & upstate and breakdown as 13 Democrats and 6 Republicans.

In very few of the districts without major Party opposition is there even minor Party opposition, so it’s fair to say these incumbents are all home free!
