Whatever happened to the Establishment Clause?

"In the end, Powell laughed off the “bring home the bacon” line as merely his way of saying that he would fight hard for Jewish concerns including affordable housing, health care, and the improvement of Yeshiva and technical education — community issues that he said Towns hasn’t addressed."

The Brooklyn Paper on Kevin Powell's meet and greet with a groups of Williamsburg Hasidim.

Actually, the problem is not merely with that pesky Bill of Rights.

Unlike elite Orthodox institutions like "Yeshiva of Flatbush", which are among the City's best schools, most Hasidic schools deliver only as much non-religious instructions as they can get away with. And, even that education is delivered begrudgingly, with a nod and a wink, letting students know it is about as important as gym class.

As such, these schools are often engines for the generation of the continuing poverty which plagues most Hasidic communities.

Hasidic educational institutions schools are almost poster children for why government should not be involved in giving taxpayer money to religious-based schools.

Technical education is a different matter, and pioneers like Rabbi David Niederman have made great strides in bringing such useful and crucial programs to Hasidic communities.

With funding often delivered by Congressman Ed Towns.
