Need Based Immigration Reform

Need Based Immigration Reform

By Michael Boyajian

The country is in an uproar over the immigration problem and those with a racist bend seem to be pushing through their own harsh and most likely unconstitutional solutions.  One wonders if they would care at all about immigration if those crossing the border were white.

Immigration reform should begin by replacing the age old system of today with a need based program.   Those in need should be allowed to enter the country while wealthy individuals would be denied entry.  Immigration would be greatly reduced from Europe, Canada, Japan, China and Taiwan and greatly increased from Mexico, Africa and Central Asia.  The later after all are places where the needy need assistance that only America can offer.

With increased legal immigration from Mexico there will be an end to illegals crossing the border.  The problem will virtually disappear overnight.  But that is not enough.  Those already in the country will be granted automatic legal status a suggestion made by Chris Matthews of MSNBC.  With legal status jobs and job quality for this group will increase and crime will be greatly reduced though it should be noted that the New York Times reports that immigrants commit no more crime than the general population.  Social care will also reach them taking a great financial burden off of taxpayers.  The tax base will also be expanded.

Legal status will provide immigrants with more mobility within the United States allowing them to move to locations where they are welcomed like New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Washington DC, Chicago and Minneapolis while allowing them to avoid places like Arizona where there is no welcome mat.  This fairly low wage group of people will bring industry to those cities that welcome them since they are a source of inexpensive labor that can be trained easily due to the education infrastructure in place in those cities.  The status of these immigrants will rise as will the fortunes of the places that open their arms to them.

This is not to say that immigration from wealthy nations will be completely closed.  Exceptions for those escaping violence and those who are scientists, artists and educators should be considered.  These professions should also be fast tracked from needy nations.

With this kind of reform in place those who care about immigrants will be rewarded, those who dislike them will not have contact with them and new arrivals will live vastly improved lives while contributing to the nation as a whole.
