The American Brain Drain

The American Brain Drain

Bob Herbert writing in the New York Times reports that America is suffering from declining academic excellence among other things falling to 12th of 36 nations with people having college degrees.

This my friends is only the tip of the iceberg.  It’s more than Americans idly sitting in front of their TVs watching reality television while munching on a bag of potato chips without a book in the house.  The real problem is the reverse brain drain that will relegate the country to Third World status.

Yes, as Americans beat their chests over war and the “immigrant threat” educated Americans are being outsourced overseas where they are paid less but where the cost of living is comparably lower.  They are living like kings overseas and Lindsay Lohan aint gonna be enough to bring them home.

Like global warming it doesn’t take a great deal of change to cause a meltdown.  Just a couple of percentage points of people not getting college degrees or educated people moving overseas will cause a rapid decline in America’s global fortunes with no amount of right wing politicians proclaiming that America is still the greatest nation on the face of the Earth being able to change things.

America will no longer live on its earnings but will be enslaved to foreign credit until people find themselves prisoners of a lending system they once perfected.  And they will not have the brain power to pull themselves out of this rut with the educated class now living abroad and the rest of the country hypnotized by the latest celebrity scandal.

It will sort of be like H.G. Wells’ prophetic book The Time Machine where people are prisoners of a scary race of underground dwellers.  And that is the future of the USA so different than the future many of us once knew in the late 1960s in the age of education excellence when America was a smart place and science ruled and we drained other nations of their brain power and we dreamed big dreams.
