A Night At The Theater On Election Eve

A Night At The Theater On Election Eve

My wife and I just saw Vincent Price in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Pit and the Pendulum on the big screen at the grand old Bardavon Theater in Poughkeepsie.  The theater’s marquee was lit up in neon lights as if we were at Times Square.  The film was preceded by a ghoulish organ recital and each member of the audience received a Dover Press collection of Poe’s short stories.  All courtesy of the National Endowment for the Arts.

There were a lot of happy people in that theater.  Elderly people living on social security, unemployed families, students and the poor.  All were made happy by this simple night out on Halloween weekend finding escape from the worries that face the nation.  All exited the theater smiling with heads held high with joy.

It was a fine example of what a caring government can do so unlike the government portrayed by the angry tea baggers across the country.  Is it wrong for our government to make a few people happy on a cold autumn night?

Why are the tea baggers against these government programs?  Is it frigid ideological belief?  No, I suspect it is because they themselves are very unhappy people and so much so that they do not want other people to enjoy life.  They want to drag all of us down into their malaise filled world.

And on Election Day they may force all of us into this bitter angry existence.  Thank about that when you cast your vote.  Do you choose happiness or anger?  It is your choice.  Our fate is in our own hands.
