That’s the findings of a new NY1/YNN poll released Thursday.
Cuomo is viewed favorably by a whopping 71 percent of registered voters across the state, crossing party lines, but the State Senate and Assembly only have favorable grades in the teens.
“Out of the starting gates, it’s so far so good for Governor Andrew Cuomo,” said Lee Miringoff, director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “
His numbers surpass initial polls on the previous three governors and are comparable to his father’s.”
But here is the test.
History has shown most new governors particulars those in New York in recent memory, from George Pataki to Elliot Spitzer and David Paterson start with high numbers, and then are bloodied once the budget process starts and of course the TV ads from unions angry with the proposed cuts.
Governor Cuomo has said he will fight back with his own TV rebuttal ads and has raised money to do so, but the first real test for his popularity will be once that process starts, a process where the Governor is looking at a 10 billion dollar deficit, and a series of dramatic measures without planning to raise taxes.
When it comes to how the State Senate is performing, just 18 percent give the body high marks in the survey.
Just 17 percent said the Assembly is doing either an excellent or good job.
Reading between the lines, voters want Gov. Cuomo to fix Albany, and blame lawmakers for creating the mess.
