The Gateway (Jumping for Gioia Edition)

Azi is capable of better; in summing up the potential Democratic candidates for Weiner’s seat, he fails to mention David Weprin, even though it seems clear he's the Weprin who actually wants it. His mention of Holtzman calls her out as a leftie, but mentions impeaching Dubya, when he should be mentioning Israel. And his nod to long shot Lyn Schulman fails to mention her big plus: that Koch will campaign with her. Who Can Possibly Replace Anthony Weiner? | PolitickerNY www.politickerny.com

CORRECTION: This morning, writing in reference to the preposterous candidates who've expressed an interest in the Weiner Congressional seat, I mentioned State Senator Jose Peralta, and asked:

"Does Peralta even have more than three EDs [Election Districts] here?"

Actually he has zero.

Another candidate, being taken a lot more seriously is Eric Gioia.

It's usually mentioned that while Gioia doesn't live in the district (he's not the only one), that's not a requirement.

Usually not mentioned, except by Paybarah, is the more relevant fact that Gioia’s old Councilmanic overlaps this district exactly zero blocks.

As I predicted last fall, the WFP is utterly useless at anything but their own self preservations. As I said then:

“The Working Families Party operates on the rationale that we should send a message to Cuomo about how much we dislike his policies by casting a vote for him on the Working Families Party line.

Does anyone see the logical problem with such an action?

You do not punish someone for his positions by voting for him. Clearly, it will not work.

Why do I say this?

Because Andrew Cuomo refused the Working Families line until they agreed to knuckle under and publicly support positions that they considered to be anathema. They agreed to do so because they knew they would not attain 50,000 votes, and thereby retain their position on the ballot, if they did not have Cuomo on their line.

Andrew Cuomo is going to consider every vote the Working Families Party achieves over 50,000 (and many under that number) to be his and not theirs. If they were their votes to deliver, they would never have knuckled under, sold out, and given Cuomo the line he had so little use for.

Further, having blinked, and practically gouged their own eyes out in the course of their first confrontation, how can the Working Families Party be trusted not to fold like a deck chair in the future? Cuomo had them by their apparently non-existent balls.” New York’s Working Families Party Hopes Gov. Andrew Cuomo Turns Left http://www.cityhallnews.com/

Supporters of Same sex Marriage may recall that State Senator Marty Golden didn’t merely oppose the bill vociferously, but actually tried to take away right same sex couples already had.

So it’s poetic justice that the new Same Sex Marriage law forces Senator Golden's catering hall to not discriminate against same sex weddings.Despite the temptation for residents of Gay Ridge and Dyke-r Heights to do the nuptial Daily Double of Gay Ridge Manor and Kleinfeld's bridal shop, I would suggest a better lesson would be meted out by all gay and Straight but Sensitive Weddings finding a different catering hall. The Forward asks, with the passage of Same Sex Marriage, what will conservative Rabbis do?

I know what the Rabbi will do at my mother-in-law's Conservative schul.

Shame on you award to The Brooklyn Paper/Courier.

Here‘s what they said: "Squadron’s vote [naming corn the State vegetable] gave his predecessor, former Sen. Marty Connor, a chance to mock the man who defeated him in 2008.”

Connor's response:

"This story is outrageous. The reporter called me, referenced the Times story from June 11,2007 (google "corn as vegetable"), and asked me what I thought of the Senate passing the bill. My quoted comments were made jokingly with no reference to Sen. Squadron.

Indeed, I had no idea how he voted on this until I read this story today. I also told the reporter that the Senate had more important issues on its agenda, such as marriage equality, health care, energy siting, etc. Turning this into some sort of confrontation with a single Senator is beyond the pale and goes again the grain of fairness.

Incidentally, last night I grilled ears of corn, applied a chipotle, lime, garlic butter I made. All enjoyed it in place of a vegetable." Grain of deception! Senate makes corn the state ‘vegetable’ www.brooklynpaper.com
