There is a general anxiety creeping across America over the impasse in Congress that is taking our nation to the brink for the sake of self serving ideological malcontents. But as my educator uncle said to me, this is a time when he recalls reading at age sixteen in the time between World War II and the Sixties a book that he found inspiration and inner strength in, JFK’s Profiles in Courage.
My late father had this book on his desk for as long as I could remember, its pages were well worn and dog eared and it got him through the tough times we all knew in the 70s. It gave him the fortitude to go beyond Watergate, save the family house and put three kids through college while being out of work for long periods of time.
The Department of Labor sent me a letter that says I am now classified as “long term unemployed” but I have this book too and although the leaders in it seem dated their messages ring true even today in the face of elected officials forgoing their allegiance to America for phony pledges to fringe groups that do not speak for the majority of our citizens.
Read this book and find strength in it for yourself but also remember what my uncle also says, ELECTION DAY IS COMING! And he is an independent voter something the extremists should fear since those like my uncle make up one third of the electorate.
