The One Percent and the Yuletide

My mother’s church group is made up mostly of seniors who work hard all year as church volunteers even contributing what little extra money they have to their group.  At the end of the year the church provides them with a small Christmas party as thanks for their work, a real treat for people who are on a fixed income.

Well as this year’s party was breaking up a wealthy patron said to everyone “why is the church paying for this we should all contribute for this party.”  Embarrassed and put on the spot people gave what they could and left.

My mom went up to the woman and said “why did you do that these people deserve a little reward for all their work.  Even the Catholic church I work at rewards their volunteers with a little party at the end of the year.”  The woman looked up at the sky and said “god is our reward.”

And this is what this epic battle between the one percent and the rest of us is about.  The rich do not want anyone to have any joy in life only they themselves are entitled to enjoyment.  The rest of us are here to serve and suffer in their eyes.

Well this rich woman may have ruined the party but she did not and could not take the spirit of the season from these seniors.  And no amount of suffering could take that away from these people who are the salt of the Earth and will wake up tomorrow and continue to volunteer for their church with heads held high.
