The Gateway (Pesach Almost Over, Can’t Wait to Have a Beer Edition)

The author notes: "Judge Jonah Goldstein, a 1940s Republican from New York, said famously, 'The Jews have three veltn (worlds): di velt (this world), yene velt (the next world) and Roosevelt.'”

Actually, Goldstein wasn't even a Republican; he was a Democrat, who ran for Mayor on a Republican/Liberal/Fusion slate (which only proves his point).

Why are Jews liberal?

Well, to the extent we still are, my conclusion jibes with that of the author: we are liberal because we all attend Seders every year, and take them to heart. Why Are American Jews So Liberal? forward.com

Fiddle with a Yidel Department: Azi linked this, implying it was some sort of first.

Sorry, but Yidel Perlstein is NOT the first Orthodox Jewish Community Board Chair.

At the very least, Herb Kramer of Brooklyn #17 (in the 1970s!!!), Jacob Goldstein Brooklyn CB#9 and Morris Faitelewicz of Manhattan CB#3 beat him to that honor.

Given the demographics of Brooklyn CB#12, it’s hard to refute the argument that this was long overdue, but one still has to be a little sad to see a dedicated community leader like Alan Dubrow ushered out so harshly; one hopes he will eventually receive a more appropriate token of appreciation for his years of service than a gold knife inserted into his back. http://www.brooklyndaily.com/stories/2012/15/kc_cb12showdown_2012_04_06_bk.html www.brooklyndaily.com

The money quote about German attitudes towards Jews comes from an Israeli so left wing that he left his country for Germany in protest over the occupation:

"They are not allowed to say anything about Jewish people, and they will never say anything about Jewish people, but to say everything about Israel is O.K…It's absolutely the new anti-Semitism for us…Israel has earned criticism, but not on this level." Colin: Surely you'd like to see my title of Fred Dicker's biography of Cuomo mocked up:

"The Greatest Governor in The History of Time: How One Man Changed Albany, and Then The World"

Gate: It could be worse; Dominic Carter could be writing it.

Colin: alas, it looks like I'm destined to lose to "Cuomo and Dicker: The Story Of A Boy and His Dog"

Gatemouth: My title would be "Suck, Don't Blow–It's Only a Figure of Speech"  The Book of Cuomo www.cityandstateny.com

Lame Duck Watch: Even Gary Ackerman insisted until the very last he was seeking re-election, but not Ed Towns. Hmm.

But, let us not overrate the procedure of declination and substitution by Vacancy Committee as a method for creating a victorious candidacy.

It works best when no one petitions against the case when Tom Manton retired and handed his seat to Joe Crowley. In that case, the incumbent declined and no one could then challenge his designated successor.

There's no advantage to Keith Wright trying to go to Congress that way; the only thing it conveys to him besides a ballot slot in a contested primary is a later start than everyone else.

On the other hand, think of the Louise Slaughter seat.

That method works best when no one petitions against the incumbent, as occurred when Tom Manton retired and handed his seat to Joe Crowley.  In that case, the incumbent declined and no one could then challenge his designated successor.

There's no advantage to Keith Wright trying to go to Congress that way; with Rangel opposed times three, the only thing such a process would convey to him (besides a ballot slot in a contested primary) is a later start than everyone else.

On the other hand, think about the Louise Slaughter seat.

Last nite at Bay Ridge Dems, Colin and I were asked about the Brooklyn Beep race, and I noted there were at least two people sitting in the room, neither of whom had ever won public office (one was Steve Harrison!!!), who had beaten Carlo Scissura in an election.

Mark Shames: On CUNY TV Channel 75 on Sat April 14th at 8pm and rebroadcast on Sun April 15th at 10am, there is a new documentary by Sarah Ewald about the "Mayor of Carroll Gardens". It features interviews with OEM Commissioner Joseph Bruno, and Deb Scotto among others.

Gate: Did I miss the primary where they elected Buddy Scotto "Mayor of Carroll Gardens"?

Can we petition for a recall?
