That all being said, the moment when the Party chose anti-Lopez dissident Lew Fidler to introduce the Party's rule changes, complete with a speech that implicitly (and not very subtly) repudiated the departed Party Leader (to wild applause), reminding everyone that our real difference were with the Republicans (calling out Marty Golden by name), and then was seconded by reformer Jo Anne Simon (who, it was announced would be co-chairing a committee on Rules with Fidler to fill in the details), one could see that maybe, just maybe, Sam Cooke was right and the night's theme wasn't "Won't Get Fooled Again," but rather ”A Change Is Gonna Come”.
Telling moment: Reformer Jo Anne Simon is nominated by the regulars as the County Committee's First Vice Chair, and black regular Robert Cornegy, apparently not having gotten the memo, nominates his Co-Leader Annette Robinson for the same slot.
The room then went silent as Jeff Feldman slowly walked down into the audience to Cornegy's seat and whispers in his ear, and then announces "the nomination has been withdrawn."
With nearly a thousand witnesses, one cannot say that this move lacked transparency. The new regime demonstrated right then and there it was intent upon keeping its promises to the reformers to the letter, but may possibly need a little more practice in getting the spirit thing just right.
Anyway, I have to admit that the reformers are to be congratulated in taking the advice I offered, and that Frank Seddio and Lew Fidler are to be congratulated for giving them a reason to take such advice in the first place. In the spirit of fairness, I must post an apology to Steve Cymbrowitz for my extremely harsh take on an ad he ran earlier this summer.
While I do not agree with Cymbrowitz's conservative stance on some social issues (but still ultimately endorsed him), the ad's text, as it ran in Hamodia was a cringe-worthy embarrassment.
However, Cymbrowitz insists that he took it on the chin from me (and some of his colleagues) because Hamodia changed the text without consulting him or his campaign.
Normally, I would not believe such an assertion, but having seen the far different text that ran the same week in the (not so different than Hamodia) Jewish Press, I would have to give Cymbrowitz the benefit of the doubt and wish he had let me know sooner.
