Weiner is done. Obama says: “If it was me, I would resign.”

Politically, it’s over for Congressman Anthony Weiner as President Obama weighs in.

"I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign," Obama told the Today show in an interview.

"When you get to the point where, because of various personal distractions, you can't serve as effectively as you need to, at the time when people are worrying about jobs, and their mortgages, and paying the bills – then you should probably step back," Obama said.

Obama added that what Weiner did was "highly inappropriate" and that he has "embarrassed himself" and his wife and family.

But he said it will ultimately be up to Weiner and his constituents to decide whether he will continue in office. Congressional ethic watchdogs have also opened an investigation into Weiner’s internet actions. (A preliminary review)

Weiner asked for a temporary leave of absence while he said he would seek mental health treatment and weigh his options.
