Africa the Next European Union

Mikhail Gorbachev speaking in the New York Times says that a nuclear test ban treaty must be concluded because it is “a step toward creating a truly global community of nations in which all share the responsibility for humankind’s future.”

Yes, there are many steps towards creating a world united in peace and prosperity.  We have discussed the way to attaining world unity through implementation worldwide of the European Union model.   Critics say the EU is a poor model, however, the tough economic times of late have shown the strengths of the EU rather than its weaknesses for it has withstood the combined economic crisis’s of Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, and perhaps even Italy using raw financial muscle to pull many of these member nations out of economic chaos.

With that said we can now apply the EU model to Africa a continent that Paul Theroux has called “an assortment of motley republics and seedy chiefdoms.”  An EU for Africa would allow member nations there to allocate scarce economic resources broadly across the continent with each nation growing strong in unity with the greater whole.

One might say that democracy is lacking there but for a few nations.  We counter by pointing to China as a hybrid capitalist and totalitarian regime which has boosted many of its people out of poverty.  Why not the same hybrid for Africa at least initially?

For whatever the pundits may say China will eventually become a democracy.  It is a proven political science curve that shows that as leisure time expands with prosperity so too does the rise of democracy.  The same would hold true then for the nations of Africa albeit over a somewhat long but steady span of time.

Democracy is pure folly for Africa?  No for in the end with union you will have raised standards of living pulling Africa out of the problems that have festered there for decades while planting the seeds of democracy.  And democracy will take hold there too, just look at South Africa after the fall of Apartheid and you too will believe.
