Some elected officials are recklessly tossing out the idea of a “no fly zone” over Libya without thought to the consequences of U.S. involvement. The most notable proponent of this is a man who thinks we should still be fighting the Vietnam War.
Our involvement in Libya could change the dynamic of the battle tipping people in that country towards Qaddafi out of distrust for the West leading to a defeat of the rebel forces.
A far more prudent plan would be to open secret diplomatic channels with the rebels so that we can learn more about them and they about us while we measure public opinion there. Once both sides are comfortable with each other then there is the opportunity for the rebels to ask for our support without fear of a backlash against Western involvement.
Under no condition should we cross into Libyan territory. We are not in a position to engage in another war. Ideally we would provide support to the rebels that will allow them to overcome Qaddafi and take Tripoli. This is the way to solve the crisis not unilateral sound bite actions that appeal to Neaderthal Neo Cons.
