In a recent appearance on “The Perez Notes,” I was asked why local NYC political blogs no longer attracted the enthusiasm they commanded during the halcyon Golden Age of the Politicker back in the ancient days of 2005. There were many things to blame and I repeated my usual suspects–which is that fragmentation, mostly caused by Ben Smith, had destroyed the community which Ben Smith had created. It seems these days the only way to get a good thread going is to have a trivial snit with a psychopath over practically nothing.

But I also cited a macro cause. People had moved on.

Foolishly, and with much regret, I waded into someone else’s fight, to defend a fellow blogger, JP (who I later learned was a pretty dark-skinned Latino), against what I believed were unfair and unwarranted accusations of racism emanating from Rock Hackshaw.

For my troubles, I got falsely accused of being JP, of leading a five year long vendetta against Rock, and most distressingly, of being a racist myself.

As I’ve already documented, there is an undercurrent of dissatisfaction about the reign of Kings County Democratic Leader Vito Lopez, both among those elements normally considered to be reformers, and also among certain elements previously considered to be Regular Democrats who supported Lopez.

One element uniting both these groups is a feeling that Lopez has overreached by, among other things, running candidates against incumbents and backing candidates of other parties against the Democrat in general elections.

No posts for a month, and insider oriented gossip sheets still invite Gatey to their parties, insider oriented podcasts still ask Gatey to be their guest and insider oriented columns still run the stories Gatey plants. Publishers even send Gatey review copies.

Life was good.

It was becoming clear that the things people loved most about Gatemouth was not having to read him.

Meanwhile, unfinished pieces concerning Israel, Iran, nuclear arms, Republican insanity, and the continued multi-party abdication from reality by our entire state government continue to pile up on Gatey’s G drive like planes over LGA.
