Liberals seem to favor a minimal response to the belligerent actions of Iran beyond the sanctions that have been put in place. This is wrong because Iran has not only threatened the free world with its work on a nuclear device and its stealth hand in terrorism but because Iran changed America from a liberal nation to a conservative one that has refuted the very compassionate ideals of our founders.
The change goes back to the late 1970s when Iranian students took American embassy workers hostage holding them for over a year and bogging down President Jimmy Carter and only releasing them when conservative Ronald Reagan became president. If not for the hostage situation Jimmy Carter would have easily been re-elected continuing to lead the country as a fiscally conservative liberal while keeping the conservative movement dormant.
When Reagan became president conservatives unleashed their poisonous ideology on the nation dismantling our economy, empowering the super wealthy, removing our safety net, weakening the role of education, running up deficits and blindly blowing out the budget on the military.
America went from a compassionate nation where all walked hand in hand to a cold heartless place where even joyful spirituality was replaced with angry sermons beckoning a vengeful god. It became the sterile world espoused by fringe authors like Ayn Rand, a place where the rich eat steak and lobster and the rest cake.
By taking firm action against Iran liberals can neutralize that country’s ability to empower American conservatives. Such action will swing our nation back to its traditional liberal footing where all Americans say, “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.”
