A Brilliant Sunrise

A Brilliant Sunrise

I started out a recent Friday night drinking an O’Doul’s listening to Who’s Next.  Ahh, the other side of fifty.  Where trying to catch a buzz from a non alcoholic beer is like trying to suck water out of a mouthful of pebbles.

During this time I was going back and forth with an old friend from college on Facebook about Mark Twain and his home in Hartford.  That got me thinking about the year I took off from college which I spent reading Twain and writing.  I took Ed Lowe of Newsday to heart and always kept a copy of a Twain book by my bed side.

Those were the days when we were trying to figure out what happened in America and how a conservative revolution took hold.  Ronald Reagan had his presidential mandate and got his legislation passed by a fair minded Congress.

And today we have a counter revolution and the return of the liberal with the ascent of President Barack Obama.  Yet even with his mandate a fanatic minority in Congress denies him his legislative agenda.  And America stands frozen as the world spins around it.  China and the European Union are on the rise and America’s heavy economic lifting is dedicated to its military muscle similar to the time oh so long ago when the noble Roman Republic deteriorated into a corrupt empire.

Polls show that the nation wants to see armies of doctors and European style healthcare, super trains like those of Japan and a green automobile industry like that of Brazil.  Yet we stand frozen sapped by endless wars against Muslims captured by a fear of terror half a century after FDR said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.”

Still hope rings eternal as the transcending words of Obama still resonate, “We are not here to fear the future but to shape it.”  In the words of Twain, the demise of Obama’s liberal agenda is highly exaggerated.  The President will not stand down and onward we continue to march toward the brilliance of another American sunrise.
