Dateline: Begun Somewhere in the Air between Denver International Airport and LaGuardia–8/29/08 Mid-Afternoon; finished back at home in Brooklyn USA 9/1/08

At the end of the first chapter of this epic journey, one may recall that I was awaken from a sound sleep and a fine dream by that eternal harbinger of unnecessary calamity, Rockwell Hermon Hackshaw.

The chapter ended with Rock explaining that because the Residence Inn had no two-bedrooms units for us at $199 (the DNC rate) they had given us each a one-bedroom for $99 instead, and that therefore he would have no need to awaken me like he just had. This was one of the few pieces of good news Rock managed to deliver during the week’s course, although those pieces of news were still greater in number than his efforts at political commentary (but why was everyone complaining?)

The Naughty Bits

Rushing Friday morning to catch a plane, I’m not sure that the article I churned out in five minutes adequately expressed my revulsion towards the momentous event of Sarah Palin’s selection as John McCain’s choice to be one heartbeat away from the most powerful position in the world, although perhaps that was because that, at that point, I knew so little about her (albeit, enough so I was well aware that there was a problem).

Anyway, my problem with Ms. Palin is not that McCain is playing the "gender card" (which would seem irresistible), but that's he's playing it with a deuce.

Like a Fish Out of Water: Reflecting on the Democrats convention

|

Maybe I am just like my father, since he was hardly ever satisfied. He held a lot of standards, sometimes they were outrageously high. He was a frustrated political activist and so am I. One time -way long ago- the government of Trinidad and Tobago convened a Commission of Inquiry into possible subversive political activities (and elements) on both islands; my dad was one of many targets. In the end they deemed him a “clever intriguer” amongst many things; but he wasn’t incarcerated; thank God. I thought of my dad on the first day of my first trip to Denver, Colorado -for the Democrat’s convention. He could always see through political phonies. It has always been tough for me to attend conventions -both here and back there- and that’s why I am never really excited about going. But I go nonetheless; I often wonder why: especially when I am like a fish out of water whenever I go.

He filed those petitions with the Federal Election Commission last week.”–same article

Exclam!!!!!!!!!!

|

Those who have played chess professionally will immediately get the meaning of my title: “Exclam!!!!!!!” You see, it refers to when a player makes a brilliant move within the game; a move so good that it has the potential to change the outcome from there on in. You see, in the game called chess -one of the oldest in the world- we record each player’s move(s) with symbols; and once you see an exclamation mark in brackets or parentheses (!) recorded next to a move, you are supposed to take a long hard look at the move and its relevance to the later outcome of the game. It sets the stage for the post-game analysis and for later evaluation. At the end of this presidential race in early November, we will all look back at John McCain’s gambit of yesterday and we will all see the genius in this move. Whoever advised him to make this selection deserves a raise. Win or lose it was a brilliant move.

Artists: America Needs You Now

|

The purpose of art (visual, music, stories in various formats) as far as I’m concerned, is communication. The message communicated could be how things are, how they really are, or how they should be, but if there isn’t one, or if the message is designed to be incomprehensible for those who aren’t in on it (like most modern art), then it isn’t really art, or at least isn’t really useful. The reason art is important is that most people’s beliefs are based on their life experiences, and new knowledge that doesn’t correspond with those life experiences tends to be discarded. I can post all the non-fiction essays and arguments, and all the spreadsheets I want here, but very few people have enough of an open mind to wade through them, understand them, and alter their beliefs based on them.

A story or other work of art, however, can serve as a kind of artificial life experience, one that broadens perspectives beyond what any given person experiences directly themselves. Properly disguised, fictional stories, songs, and visual art can therefore change more minds than carefully researched collections of facts, because the recipient of the message comes to the new perspective on their own, as if it were their own idea, not something forced on them by someone else. Such epiphanies don’t bruise the ego. I bring this up now because there is a message that needs to get out there, given the economic conditions Americans are likely to face in the next few years: that they can be happy, and live fulfilling lives, without going deeper and deeper into debt to spend more and more money on more and more goods and services that they may no longer be able to afford.

Dateline: Somewhere in the Air between Denver International Airport and LaGuardia–8/29/08 Early Afternoon

Did anyone expect a speech anything less than electrifying? The build up, the hype, the expectations should have made the actual bill of goods somewhat anticlimactic, but it was not.

Sat, as I was at Invesco, in the section reserved for the “written press” located in the better area of the bleachers (Rock was on the floor rocking the vote with the true believers and the party hacks), my cynical remarks about much of the proceedings were greeted with little ill will; for sure, my neighbors and I were erotically attracted to the Man from Honolulu, but we intended to go home with our panties on. Yet by evening’s end, not only was seduction achieved, but in the morning we still had no regrets. He even sent me a text message! God, there were fireworks, even before they set off the pyrotechnics.

Sarah Palin?!?

|

Dateline: Engelwood, Colorado-8/28/08–9:12 AM Mountain Time

One of the paradoxes of political conventions is how much they tend to cut one off from political news. I haven't read a paper of watched TV in days, so perhaps I've missed something.

Why would McCain pick Sarah Palin? Even her name suggests something out of Monty Python? Does she make McCain look more like a lumberjack and less like a dead parrot? I think it confirms my suspicion that McCain is channeling Basil Fawlty.

Surely, the unique characteristic she brings to the ticket (shared by over half the population) could be found among someone more qualified in the 49 other states (and even in Alaska). Perhaps, he’s looking to create contrast with the Democrats by showing that, on his ticket, all the gravitas resides firmly with the Presidential candidate.

An Explanation

|

Due to various personal problems and other issues that developed since last week Saturday (starting in New York City), I have been unable to post any columns since my piece on the vice-presidential pick of Joe Biden by Barack Obama. It is true that I was in Denver, Colorado, during the duration of the Dems convention, where I did over one hundred interviews while there. I also physically attended two nights of the convention events. The first was spent with the New York delegation, when Hillary Clinton addressed the convention; the other was the final night when Obama accepted the historic nomination.
