New York’s Secession Talk
By Michael Boyajian
There is a lot of talk from various windbags about certain states like Texas seceding from the United States of America apparently ignorant of the fact that 600,000 on both sides gave their lives in the Civil War.
They rant on about big government and spending and taking away their liberties yet they won’t pause for an instant when it comes to placing a check on our bloated military spending and as for liberties, where were they when the Bush Administration was wiretapping everybody?
But I digress. Don’t go, stay, we’ll go. Maybe its time for New York to secede from the U.S. considering how much the country has changed and filled with anger so that they are no longer on an even keel with New York. In fact many New Yorkers are afraid of the rest of the country thinking only crazies live outside the Metro Area and a few pockets here and there. Why many Manhattanites will only travel between the city and Europe and organizations like the French Institute have their language classes sold out on a regular basis.
It would seem that New York has more in common with the European Union and perhaps after seceding could become part of the Union. Of course this would require passport control at all the Jersey crossings but I am sure we could solve that problem and learn to live with the concrete wall the rest of the country will build around us. We will also have to settle who gets the Statue of Liberty, New York or what is left of the U.S.
The commonality with Europe is apparent for example in Mayor Bloomberg’s innovations copied from the UK and Europe like congestion pricing and commuter bike rentals. New Yorkers love British music, French cooking and Italian style and even look to the BBC for their news more often than not.
But what will happen to the U.S. after New York leaves? Well, California will split off into its own nation with a GNP equal to the rest of the country and Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Detroit and New England will join Canada. Miami, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Raleigh Durham, Philadelphia and northern Virginia will become independent city states. Then the Sunbelt will turn the rest of what’s left of the country into a theocracy sort of like a fundamentalist Christian style Iran. But because of their lack of emphasis on science and tendency to put belief before fact they will eventually decline into a third world sump in possession of a very large military. Yes, they will carry that elephant to the bitter end. So, some will experience a new sunrise while others will have a bitter sunset.
