Will Rangel Cut the Deal?

Congressman Rangel finds himself between what is said: “a rock and a hard place.”

In the twilight of his career, he is forced to make a decision that he does not want to make.

Having Known Rangel for a number of decades, and knowing how important his legacy is to him, every ounce of Rangel’s being is to fight the ethical charges all the way.

It wouldn’t be surprising if he took that route.

But the 800 pound gorilla in the room, should he decide to fight, Rangel’s situation could embarrass Democrats running for re-election all over America, and at the end of the day, Rangel could be looking at expulsion from Congress.

Rangel has spent a number of years helping Democrats win across the country, and always in his sight, the “Chairmanship” of all-powerful Ways & Means Committee. Some thought Rangel could never pull it off, but he did.

What’s sad is New York would have benefited even further with a New Yorker holding on to the title Mr. Chairman. Rangel reached his goal, and now days away from celebrating his 80th birthday, Rangel should be on top of the world, cruising to re-election victory.

Rangel’s re-election will probably still easily happen, and to those that suggest Rangel should resign will be waiting a very long time. It is not in his DNA.

But there is one comparison that will be made in the days ahead considering Rangel came into congress narrowly defeating legendary Harlem Congressman Adam Clayton Powell on an “ethics” wrap, and now finds himself in the same situation.

So does Rangel cut a deal?

It’s clear he was willing to admit mistakes…but not that some of his actions were intentional.

The personable Charlie Rangel finds himself in a tough position.
